Ioannis Parisis: «The Maritime Dimension of European Security»

This 94-page work explores the importance of the maritime security in general and especially for Europe and identifies current and predicted threats en-countered in this field. Practically, it constitutes an analysis of the current general status of maritime security in the area around Europe and beyond it. It also analyzes the pursuit of the efforts and initiatives undertaken by the European Union, Third countries and international organizations, as well as the strategies launched in the domain of the maritime security.

Main focus is on the process to the newly adopted European Maritime Security Strategy (EUMSS) and its objectives, as well as on the Action Plan for its implementation, adopted by the Council of the EU in December 2014. The role of the European Union’s CSDP and NATO to ensure maritime security and the cooperation between the two organizations in maritime security issues are also examined. Furthermore, this work analyzes the necessities of the EU and its priorities in the maritime security domain, as well as the contribution of satellite systems in maritime surveillance.
